This is my favourite Goodreads cut and paste so far by a country mile, because this is what it had to say about Mercy- “New. Some shelf wear.”
And in a wonderful metaphorical way it kind of works for this book. It is a new Picoult, a writer I have read several times before and can be good, but this is ok rather than good and I agree with the reviewer who said that “this could have been called Selfish not Mercy”.
A mercy killing, affairs and small town justice and the nature of love and death, this is what it is ostensibly about, but it is hard to care about these grand themes as it is hard to care about the main characters. Although how the opening of the books ties in with later events is very cool, so much so that I had to go back and read it again.
So it is new and it is a bit worn and tired in it’s characterisation and is just a little off…but readable none the less.
